Thesymptomsoftoxoplasmosisareverydifferent,andmostoftheinfectedpersonsdonotreallyfeelill.Atypicalsignofthediseaseisaflu-likesensationwithswollenlymphnodesandmusclepain,whichmaylastformonths.Thesevereformoftoxoplasmosiscausesdamagestothebrain,theeyesandfurtherorgans.Evenwhentheillnesshasceased,areactivechronictypecandevelop.Thetransmissionofthediseasetakesprimarilyplacebytheingestionofcatfeces,e.g.duringworkinthegardenorinthecourseofthepetcare.Butinfectiveagentscanalsoappearinrawmeatorcontaminatedwater.Normallytheclinicalsymptomsdisappearaftersomeweeksevenwithouttreatment,butforpregnantwomenandindividualswithreducedimmunesystematherapywithdrugsshouldbeinitiated.
